Broadway Tuesday

Today for Broadway Tuesday I am going to review one of my favorite musicals I have ever seen: Phantom of the Opera.  I have seen it live three times.  I have watched it on youtube more than I can count.  I have pretty much every lyric memorized by heart and I have watched the movie many times.
For those of you who don't know, Phantom was written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.  It is based on the 1911 novel written by Gaston Leroux.  The title character is a musical genius who has a horribly disfigured face.  he wears a mask and hides from the world underneath the Paris Opera house.
Christine Daae is a young woman who works at the Opera house as a ballet and chorus girl.   She is vocally trained by the Phantom, whom she calls her "Angel of Music," but she never sees him.
When the opera's diva, Carlotta, resigns after an "accident" caused by the "Opera Ghost", Christine takes over her role.
The phantom becomes jealous when Christine starts spending time with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny and the two begin to fall in love.  Driven insane by jealously, the phantom kidnaps Christine Daae  and takes her to his underground lair, hoping she will chose him over the handsome Raoul.  He is not aware that Raoul is willing to go to great lengths to rescue his new fiancee from this "Opera Ghost."

I loved the songs in this musical from all the way from the dramatic "The Phantom of the Opera" to the sweet "All I Ask of You" to the haunting "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again."
My favorite performers in this were John Cudia as the phantom (But I also liked Hugh Panaro, Ramin Karimloo, and Gerard Butler).  I liked Sierra Boggess as Christine and Sean McLaughlin and Hadley Frasier as Raoul.
Have you seen Phantom of the Opera?  Would you like to?  If you have seen it, who were your favorite performers?

  1. The Phantom of the Opera is my second-favorite musical after Les Miserables. I like all of the performers you mentioned. Hadley Frasier, Sierra Boggess, and Ramin Karimloo were really good in the anniversary performance, and Ramin and Sierra are great in the sequel. Hadley is the perfect Raoul, but Sean McLaughlin is hilarious in the role, especially with his facial expressions, but he still manages to portray Raoul very well. John Cudia is one of my favorite Phantoms. The movie is one of my favorite movies. However, I really don't like the original cast with Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and Steve Barton.
I would be interested in seeing Adam Pascal play the Phantom, too.

  2. I have seen Phantom of the Opera a few times, including the movie. My favorite character is the Phantom, and I think the best of the ones I've seen is John Cudia playing him.

  3. Phantom is excellent. JOHN CUDIA is the best Phantom, I've seen him live twice. Hugh Panaro also is an excellent Phantom. I had the opportunity to meet him and Marni Rab(Christine) after their performance they are both truly lovely people, They took the time to chat with us and sign autographs and take pickures. Fans truly appreciate it although I'm sure it can become redundant. Sean McLaughlin was also in this cast and I've seen him as Raoul 3 times, he indeed is quite the character with his facial expressions and gives his character...well character. lol I do agree Cortney, Hadley Fraiser is the perfect Raoul, How could Christine resist. Hadley is so good in Les Miz as well. I too know almost every lyric by heart. Adam Pascal does have a beautiful voice but I fear those dimples would give him away. I also enjoyed the movie wirh Gerry and Emmy it made me want to see the live Broadway shows. I also was glad to see Gerry without a million arrows through him! lol Cortney I also agree with your comment about the original cast, Sarah Brightman acted too creepy for Christine.
